So I know that Jamie cringes when her mom says that they are high school sweethearts, but that doesn't mean I'm going to stop calling them that! I've actually known Jamie and Mikey since they were in high school, so I have the personal experience to know that they were a great couple, even back then. If that's not enough proof for you, here's their prom photo!
Not to embarrass them too much, but my son was actually the ring bearer at their wedding. Only three years old at the time, they made sure to give him a toy train when they asked him to be in their wedding, and bribed him with the promise of M&Ms to ensure that he followed through with his duties day of. As thoughtful as they are toward each other, I can assure you that they are just as thoughtful to others as well, even their little ring bearer. Here are a few more tidbits about Jamie and Mikey that we didn't cover on the podcast.
What's your couple song?
Jamie: Not sure that we have a couple song but if I had to pick something, The Light of the Seven (Game of Thrones) by Ramin Djwadi. I could listen to that song all day, and Michael learned it on the piano.
Michael: Felices los 4 by Maluma (kidding)
How are you different? How are you similar?
Jamie: I think we are similar in that we have a lot of the same opinions, viewpoints etc. It makes it easy to complain about things together, because he always gets where I’m coming from. But, on the other hand we have a very different aesthetic, which makes trips to Ikea much harder. Not to mention we are both super stubborn, and I get overly offended when he doesn’t like my style choices. (Because he should like everything I do, obviously.)
What's your favorite thing to do for the other?
Jamie: Simple but I like cooking dinner for him. It’s a win-win because cooking helps me de-stress after work.
Michael: When Jamie is in the kitchen, she’s like a blender without a top. After we eat I clean up and do the dishes to make sure the next time she wants to make a mess there’s a clean slate.
What are some traditions that you've established as a couple?
Jamie: We try to go on a Christmas vacation every year. We both get fairly stressed around the holidays, so avoiding them together is a nice getaway. We celebrate with family when we get back.
Michael: Wing Wednesdays: Beer, wings, fries, and Cops (or other crime show) reruns.
What fictional couple do you relate with the most?
Michael: Bob and Linda Belcher. I love burgers and Jamie is constantly singing off-key.
Who are some of your best relationship examples/inspirations?
Jamie: Barack and Michelle Obama are serious power couple goals. They’re so publicly supportive of each other and it’s really refreshing.
Are there any specific relationship skills you're each working on right now?
Jamie: Not stealing Michaels iPhone cables.
Michael: honestly at the moment, nothing. Not to say we are the perfect couple but there are times in our relationship where things run really smoothly, and in the future when things come up, we work through them. Also not getting angry when Jamie steals my iPhone cables.
Bonus: Best and worst relationship advice (from the interview)
Mikey: Happy wife happy life.
Jamie: Don't go to bed angry.
Mikey: Love is a choice, but love isn't always the same.
Jamie: You wake up every morning and you choose that person.
